How to choose the right Kindle Case for you?

how to choose the right kindle case

There is a breathtaking array of Kindle covers and cases available these days from corporate looking leather cases to neoprene sleeves to covers that make your Kindle look like a normal book. But with so many options to choose from how do you find the case that is right for you!?

As choosing a case for your Kindle is a very personal choice we thought that rather than presuming to tell you what you should get we have instead created the Kindle Accessories Hub Case Buying Guide to make finding your perfect case that little bit easier!

Case Buying Guide

The first thing you need to consider when looking for a case is where you will be using your Kindle. Will it just be around home or will it be bumping around in your bag on the bus to work? If your Kindle is a home body then you probably won’t need a thick padded case however if your Kindle travels then a case with some protection is probably a good idea.

The next thing you need to think about is the lighting conditions you’re going to be reading in. Like a normal book the Kindle always needs an external source of illumination as it does not have a backlight so if you’re planning on reading in the dark then getting a case with an inbuilt light source would be worth the extra cost.

The third consideration for any Kindle case is extra features. Do you want a case with a stand so you can read your Kindle hands free? Do you want to be able to access the ports on your Kindle without removing it from its case? Do you want pockets to store your audio book headphones in?

The last, and arguably most important, aspect to consider in any potential case purchase is style. Do you want something simple and unobtrusive, a case that fits in at the office or one that is as individual as you? Are you after leather, plastic or neoprene? Of all the things to think about when buying a case for your Kindle this is the thing that will most strongly influence how happy you are with your purchase and with the range available these days it’s worth taking the time to get this element right.

Hopefully we’ve helped you narrow down your choices but if you’re still struggling with what case you should get have a look at our article the Top 10 Kindle Covers and Cases for some options that we recommend.

What stores have Kindle accessories?

kindle accessories

When buying Kindle accessories, like any product, there are two choices, traditional bricks and mortar shops or online? Bricks and mortar stores have the advantage of allowing you to take and use your purchase immediately however the downside is their range is limited and you usually pay an increased cost over the same product bought online. Buying online on the other hand gives you access to every product under the sun at a cheaper price than you could find in store, the drawback of course being that you have to wait until your shiny new toy arrives in the post before you can get your hands on it.

Now that we have your 2 basic buying options sorted out let’s answer today’s question What stores carry Kindle accessories? To answer this we’re going to divide our answer into the two categories previously discussed, bricks and mortar stores and online, so read on and find out where you can get your Kindle and Kindle accessories.

Bricks & Mortar

If you need that accessory right now or you just simply can’t wait for your Kindle to arrive in the post then these are the stores for you. They are all large chains so you should be able to find one nearby!

  • Target: Amazon’s primary bricks and mortar Kindle stockist. Stocks the Kindle and a large range of Kindle accessories (cases/covers, lights, chargers, screen protectors, etc)
  • Staples: Stock the Kindle and a range of Kindle accessories including cases/covers and chargers
  • Best Buy: Stock the Kindle and a large range of M-Edge covers and cases
  • Radio Shack: Stock the Kindle and a limited range of Kindle covers and cases

Note: Help us keep this list up to date, if you know of any other chains stocking the Kindle please let us know in the comments section below.

Online

If you can’t find what you’re looking for in store, want the best price and don’t mind waiting a day or two then nothing beats shopping online. However there are so many places online selling Kindle accessories that we couldn’t possibly list them all here so we are just covering the major players. Feel free to suggest other sellers, particularly of speciality items, in the comments section below.

  • Amazon.com: Being an Amazon product it makes sense that the largest range is available from Amazon itself. Stocks all Kindle models and a vast range of Kindle accessories (cases/covers, lights, chargers, screen protectors, carry bags, etc)
  • eBay.com: You can find pretty much anything on eBay including a vast range of new and used Kindles and Kindle accessories
  • Online from Bricks & Mortar chains: Apart from their physical stores, all of the bricks & mortar stores listed above sell their range online

Kindle vs Nook

kindle vs nook

When comparing the top eReaders, there is the popular Kindle vs Nook debate. Both have numerous features that are useful for avid book lovers that are on-the-go, but there are key differences that may sway you one way or the other.

The Kindle is available in a 3G format that provides Wi-Fi capabilities. This particular version is also available in two colors. It features a six inch screen that uses E Ink technology to provide a rich reading experience, with good contrast and no glare, and is lightweight, weighing less than nine ounces. Without the use of wireless, the Kindle is designed to last up to two months on a single battery charge (Estimate is based on reading for a half an hour daily). A QWERTY keyboard is supplied under the screen for typing and internal storage is 4GB with about 3GB free for use.

The Nook is also available with Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities. The back of the Nook is designed with interchangeable panels to customize colors and it also features a six inch screen with E Ink technology. The 3G+Wi-Fi model weighs just over 12 ounces and has a two month battery life with wireless access disabled. Included is a color touch screen used for navigation and typing. The Nook has a 2GB internal hard drive, but allows users to expand the capacity up to 16GB with a MicroSD card.

If you’re looking for a wider selection of content to download you may find the Kindle to be more versatile as there are plenty of free and low cost books, magazines, newspapers, and other content (see our article “Where to find free eBooks for Kindle?”). The content available for the Nook is more limited. Both the Kindle and Nook offer games, but the Kindle has more games and applications available. Each one offers the ability to lend books to other users for a short time, listen to audio books, and browse the web. Both the Kindle and Nook can download similar eReader software to phones or computers and sync their library with those devices.

If you’re in the market for an eReader and deciding between the Kindle and Nook you will notice the slight price difference, which is about $20 with the Kindle being more expensive. This price difference is pretty negligible considering the Kindle is both lighter in weight, more user-friendly and has a physical keyboard. The Kindle also offers a greater range of applications and content that it supports, and is also available in a modified version for a discounted price that includes advertisements. However, if you plan to use a lot of hard drive space you may decide the MicroSD expansion slot available for the Nook is a more important feature.

All in all the whole Kindle vs Nook debate is fairly even and you will be satisfied with whichever reader you purchase. However at Kindle Accessories Hub we believe the Kindle edges out the Nook (surprise!) as the better eReader and gives you the most for your hard earned cash.

Kindle 3 Review

kindle 3 eReader

Kindle took the eReader to the next level changing it from a device for gadget minded individuals to a reader for the masses and did so in just three years. Amazon has now introduced the new and improved Kindle 3.

Amazon hasn’t reinvented their successful eReader, but instead has advanced the Kindle with some great new features. The company has made the device smaller and lighter while keeping it the same 6-inch size. The screen has been enhanced and the key Wi-Fi feature is a new addition.

Several versions of the new Kindle are available. One is equipped with both Wi-Fi and 3G wireless, it retails at $189. Another version with Wi-Fi alone will cost you around $139 and is available in graphite or white in a compact design. Handy new additions to the eReader include more memory at 4GB and the life of the battery is now twice as long. This gives readers eight weeks instead of just four with the wireless off.

Reading becomes complicated as individuals age and health problems set in, such as weakened eyesight and arthritis. Reading with typical bound books can be challenging and an eReader with the ability to increase the size of the text or change the font is a big help to readers with sight problems. The light weight of the Kindle and its ability to turn pages with a touch of a finger keeps readers reading instead of turning to different activities such as TV.

The Kindle 3 eReader is the lightest of the bunch at 8.5 ounces and is extremely thin at .33 inches. The size of the device is around paperback novel size, except lighter and thinner making it easy to hold for long time periods. Amazon has also improved the contrast to 50 percent greater than the last Kindle to assist in reducing eye tension.

When book addicts travel, they must decide which three or four books they intend to bring for their trip. The Kindle takes away the challenge of deciding between books since you can bring up to 3,500 eBooks anywhere you go. In reality, most people don’t even own that many books and should consider the space saving capabilities of the Kindle within their home.

Consumers can choose and purchase from 750,000 books or download free books from a collection of 1.8 million out-of copyright books. (Check out our article on where to find free Kindle ebooks)

With the Kindle other factors to consider include sampling books for free. Most eBooks cost $9.99 or less, but readers can try out the first chapter to see if they’re tempted. The eReader has a New Oxford American Dictionary for quick and convenient access allowing users to easily increase their vocabulary.

Students will find the online encyclopedia convenient and looking up historical facts, words and phrases will enhance reading, studying and learning. The eReader allows users to mark the text with notes and bookmark pages or passages. Readers can also share important information with friends and family on Twitter or Facebook.

The E Ink Pearl display presents clear, well-defined text and images along with a no glare screen, which makes reading on the Kindle similar to reading out of a book even when outdoors.

The Kindle includes Whispersync technology that lets consumers download books to a PC, MAC or smartphone. It even has a Text-to-Speech option, which will read the text to you. Additional benefits are web browsing capabilities and an MP3 player for music. The PDF reader is also useful for keeping documents handy.

The Kindle eReader is a flexible device that will enhance the reading experience of any bookworm.
